Jimmy Buffett, the renowned American singer-songwriter famous for his 1970s hit "Margaritaville," has passed away at the age of 76.

A statement on his website conveyed, "Jimmy peacefully departed on the evening of September 1, surrounded by his family, friends, music, and beloved dogs." It noted that he lived his life like a song until his final breath and would be deeply missed by countless admirers.

The exact cause of Buffett's demise was not disclosed, though he had been hospitalized in recent months.

Born in Mississippi and raised in Alabama, Jimmy Buffett later moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he initially pursued a career in the music industry, with aspirations of becoming a country singer. His journey eventually led him to Florida, where he played a pivotal role in popularizing the tropical rock genre, subsequently embraced by artists like Jack Johnson.

Buffett achieved musical prominence with his 1977 album "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes," featuring the hit song "Margaritaville," which spent an impressive 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His repertoire included other notable hits like "Fins," "Come Monday," and "Son of a Son of a Sailor."

Throughout his career, Jimmy Buffett received two Grammy nominations and released over 20 albums. He even revealed that he had recorded new music earlier in the year.

Buffett's music inspired the Broadway musical "Escape to Margaritaville," which debuted in 2018. His laid-back musical style and promotion of the "beach bum" lifestyle earned him a dedicated fan base known as "Parrotheads."

The news of his passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow musicians, including Elton John, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and LL Cool J.

Despite health challenges that led to show cancellations earlier in the year, Buffett remained committed to performing with his Coral Reefer Band. In a Facebook post, he promised to make it up to his fans once he was back in shape, emphasizing the therapeutic nature of performing for both him and his audience.

In addition to his music career, Jimmy Buffett found success as a bestselling author and entrepreneur. He established a series of popular resorts, clubs, restaurants, merchandise shops, and retirement communities bearing the Margaritaville brand. His estimated net worth, according to Forbes, exceeded $1 billion.

Jimmy Buffett is survived by his wife Jane and their three children.
